Making Music Easier for Creators

Making Music Easier for Creators

On this episode of Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way, host Will Crist talked with Alex Kochetkov, the founder of Mubert, a musical platform that generates music with the power of AI. Although Mubert is Alex’s first startup, his determination and experience have helped him grow a successful startup quickly. The idea for Mubert came while Alex was on a run and became frustrated with finding the right music to accompany him. He came up with a solution, gathered a small team, and got to work making better music choices available to himself and others. Throughout the episode, Will and Alex discussed how Mubert works, the short term and long term goals for the company, and obstacles that Alex and his team have encountered along the way.

Adaptive Music

“It’s super difficult to choose the tracks to run [to]…And it was so annoying for me. And I decided to create something that will help me to run and not to think about music.” Alex Kochetkov, (2:57)

The idea behind Mubert all started one day when Alex wanted to enjoy music that paired well with his run. However, he found himself frustrated having to think too hard about his choices. Later the same day, Alex had the idea for his music platform, and he facilitated a meeting with the first team: a back end developer, a database developer, a musician, and a marketing guy. Together, they came up with a way to generate new music using thousands of song samples and sounds. With Mubert, users can choose the genre, duration, and mood of the music they want, and the app goes to work creating unique tracks for the listener, all royalty-free.

Overcoming Obstacles

As with any company, the road to Mubert has not been entirely easy. The biggest obstacle that Alex had to face was fundraising. As a first-time startup founder, Alex was confident that his idea was wonderful, so he figured the money would follow. However, he quickly learned that it would be difficult to raise funds without a strategic plan. Months after the idea for Mubert was born, Alex moved to the US to raise funds for his startup. He learned about fundraising strategies, venture capital, and how to market himself to others.

Another obstacle Mubert had to face was bringing together a world-wide team. Mubert is now around 20 people, and team members and investors are spread out across 10 countries. With this comes challenges to arrange meeting times and topics, so the team only schedules meetings to discuss essential business strategies, and they find time that works with all time zones so they can collaborate effectively.

The Future of Mubert

Alex’s initial goal was to create a unique listening experience for users, which the company still strives to achieve. The team at Mubert is currently working to make it an even simpler process, where users can put in a song they like and Mubert can generate similar song creations for them. Alex’s ultimate goal for the future of Mubert is to make the music creation process easy for content creators, and to collaborate with other startups.
