Leading Your Team to Success Instead of Burnout

On this episode of Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way, host Will Crist sits down with Derek Gerber, Senior Vice President of Explainify. Over the last year, Derek has been implementing the EOS system at Explainify, and the results have been nothing short of impressive. While some of the brand’s videos are long-form explainer videos, Derek explained that Explainify also focuses on creating short-form, attention-grabbing content that helps brands stand out. With the rise of TikTok and other short-form video platforms, you must catch the viewer’s attention in the first seven seconds of the video, keep it for seven more seconds, and use the remaining time to convince them to check out your long-form content.

EOS

Before going through the EOS implementation process, Derek was trying to balance his work and family life, all while working 60, 70, and even 80-hour weeks. He sent emails from his desk at midnight and responded to messages during his family vacations. In short, the balance didn’t exist.

He was working the way he was taught—hard and with extended hours. He struggled to give up control of tasks and responsibilities he should have long since delegated, and he saw that his lifestyle wasn’t sustainable.

After implementing EOS, Derek saw a large-scale change. He’s sticking with 40-hour workweeks, he has time for his kids, and he’s no longer answering emails from the beach.

After implementing EOS over the past year, we continue to grow. It has onboarded our team members in a much more effective way, and then it also shows them that burnout is not a celebrated, award-winning opportunity here. We don’t do that. We work to openly communicate and create transparency and trust across each department.” (17:18) – Derek Gerber

Derek noticed another significant change after implementing EOS: Explainify had become quite attractive to potential applicants. A year ago, Explainify struggled to amass a handful of applications for an open position, but now, the business has people breaking down their doors to submit a resume.

A year ago, when we were growing quickly at a state of point, we put out a couple of job applications. We had four applicants over six weeks—at a time where we needed to hire people very quickly. Now, [after implementing EOS] we had 600 applications in four days, and we had to shut it down.” (41:40) – Derek Gerber
