Leaders know their strengths and weaknesses. Shanna Tingom, founder and co-owner of Heritage Financial Strategies, shares the value of leading within a framework. Shanna walks through how a strong business operating system has helped her optimize her leadership, confront pain points, and plan for growth.

Alleviating Leadership Pain Points

Shanna has always been an entrepreneur. She’s a true visionary who loves throwing ideas against the wall to see what sticks. In 2019, Shanna’s husband joined her as co-owner of Heritage, balancing her visionary leadership with his integrator skills.

However, they were having a hard time structuring their businesses. They had invested lots of work into building good processes, but the pieces didn’t quite come together — and their relationship began to suffer. They knew they needed help.

Shanna says once they started implementing EOS, her pain points decreased significantly. For example, she has found that EOS greatly improved communication.

[23:17] “I can ask a question in [the EOS] framework of a task or a milestone and it’s just a question — it’s not an accusation. I didn’t have that ability before.”

Traits Of A Successful Leader

Shanna shares that EOS has helped her implement some leadership best practices that include:

  • Always plan for growth because it’s hard to undo decisions.
  • Define your target market and say no to prospects who don’t fit that description.
  • If an employee isn’t a good fit, let them go — it will be mutually beneficial.

If a problem keeps recurring in your business, Shanna recommends taking a good look at yourself first.

[26:00] “If [your business] . . .  isn’t moving in the direction that you want, it’s almost always [because of] your own limitation, whether its skill, mindset, or simply just not having the right tools.”

With hard work, self-knowledge, and the right tools, you can lead your business to achieve great things.
