If you read my previous blog post, you know that I was obsessed with my Grandmother Bessie’s shoe closet growing up. And the obsession with shoes has followed me through life. To this day I love shoe shopping, but it’s not about just ANY shoe – it’s about the RIGHT shoe.
One of the most vivid images from my childhood is my Grandmother Bessie’s walk-in shoe closet. What a sight to behold! Every shoe in perfect order by color, heel size, and use (fancy vs. day-to-day).
I can only imagine the time she must have spent getting and keeping that closet in such order. Making sure every shoe was in its correct place, ready to serve its specific purpose. She got rid of shoes that no longer fit or weren’t adding value, and was always able to pair outfits with perfectly coordinated shoes.
She took the time to structure her closet and its contents properly, periodically checking to make sure it was organized the best it could be. It’s the same with your business.
Are you making Hits in your business or are you focused on Home Runs? Home Runs are more exciting and usually attributable to success, but Hits are the formula for longstanding success. Look at the careers of Hall of Fame inductees Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays.
When was the last time you asked yourself: “Is everyone on my team in the right seat?”.
To paraphrase Jim Collins from his book ‘Good to Great’, making sure that you have the ‘Right People’ (Core Values Fit), in the ‘Right Seats’ (Job Roles), is fundamental to the success and growth of your company. Having any number of people in the wrong roles is a defining factor of whether any business grows or stalls in the long term.
