The Five Frustrations Business Owners Face, and the Change That Helps Solve Them

Share:

Business owners tend to face the same five frustrations as their companies grow.

Most business owners don’t start out frustrated. They start with a big vision, a lot of energy, and the belief that if they keep growing the company, they’ll eventually have more freedom and less stress. And for a while, that’s exactly how it feels. You win some business, build a team, and start seeing the company take shape.

Then, somewhere along the way, things get harder. The team grows, the decisions get bigger, the issues get more complicated, and the owner slowly becomes the person everyone depends on to solve everything. Before long, the business they built for freedom starts running them instead.

As EOS Implementers, we hear these same frustrations repeatedly from business owners who are ready to start running on the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). The good news is that EOS helps leadership teams strengthen the Six Key Components of their business, which helps them address these frustrations and get more of what they want from their business.

But first, the key is to recognize the Issues you’re facing in your business; do any of these five frustrations sound familiar?

1. Lack of Control

Somehow, as the company has grown, you feel like you’re still running every department, and every day brings a new fire you have to put out. One of my clients who owns a Midwest marketing services agency said exactly that at the start of their EOS journey: she felt more like a firefighter than a CEO. Once her team clarified their Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO), decisions became easier to make. She moved from firefighting to leading, and her team started solving more issues on their own

2. Profit Pressure

You’re working harder than ever, but the numbers don’t show it. A family-owned logistics services company I worked with started using an EOS Scorecard, containing 5-15 high-level weekly Measurables. Within 90 days, they saw a hidden cost driver: fender benders. They created new safe driving standards, and profit improved as insurance premiums and deductible payouts declined.

3. People Problems

Nothing drains an owner faster than people issues. The wrong people in the wrong seats make everything harder. I worked with a tech company whose “top” salesperson was toxic for the culture. Using the People Analyzer, the issue became clear: he wasn’t a fit. Replacing him with someone who lived their Core Values solved numerous issues throughout the organization.

4. Hitting the Ceiling

Every business hits a point where what used to work no longer comes as easily, and growth stalls. My healthcare IT provider client was drowning in complexity. By focusing on the EOS Five Leadership Abilities, Simplify, Delegate, Predict, Systemize, and Structure, they broke through the ceiling they’d been hitting for almost two years.

5. Nothing’s Working

You’ve read the books, hired the consultants, and tried the seminars, but nothing sticks. A home services company owner told me they had three different strategy binders collecting dust on a shelf. With EOS, it was easier to get and keep traction with Rocks every 90 days and weekly Level 10 Meetings. For the first time, they set clear priorities for the quarter and actually finished them.

From Frustration to Freedom

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not broken; you’re normal.

Most business owners hit these frustrations at some point. The difference is whether they keep carrying all of that weight themselves or choose a better way to run the business.

EOS helps leadership teams get clear on their Vision, gain Traction, and become Healthy, so the business can stop depending on the owner for every answer, every decision, and every next move.
