Having now worked very closely with over 100 companies, I find it easy to provide some very interesting stats on a percentage basis. One, which is the subject of this message, has to do with changes to leadership teams during the EOS Process. I’ve found that 80 percent of the time, one or more people change on the leadership team within the first two years of beginning the process.
This means that if you’re sitting there feeling a little (or a lot) frustrated about your business and want to make it great, four times out of five, the makeup of the leadership team you currently have isn’t the one you’ll end up with.
Half the time, the change is removing one or more people from your team, and half the time, it’s adding one or more. Incidentally, two clients completely replaced everyone on their team. The point is this: If you’re truly going to commit to building a great company, you need a strong leadership team and to get the right people in the right seats. You must be prepared for change on your team. However, you may be one of the fortunate 20 percent of cases where there is no change.
Think about your current team. Is it structured right? Are all members the right people (are they a core value fit)? Is each person in the right seat (does he or she get, want, and have the capacity to do that job)?
If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, it’s time to act. Not haphazardly or recklessly. Just start to put in place a methodical, step-by-step plan. Then take it one step at a time. Within two short years (and hopefully much sooner), you will suddenly have a strong leadership team in place.
