Kick-Starting EOS®

Houston started at 97 Display on the sales team and worked his way up to the helm. He decided to implement EOS as the company grew and knew Kristie would be an excellent Integrator™ based on their years of working together.

Kristie thought that the Visionary skill set was required for leadership and spent a lot of time forcing those skills. It wasn’t until she became an Integrator that she realized she had a different, equally valuable skill set that she could use.

Kristie notes that one of the challenges she faced as a new Integrator was navigating the power dynamic between being the final decision-maker while also reporting to Houston.

“Another challenge was speaking for each other and acting as one instead of acting as two. The closest thing I can equate it to is when you first get married and [you realize] it’s not just about me anymore.” — Kristie Kinley

Getting on the same page isn’t easy. Even after three years, Houston and Kristie say they are still perfecting it. However, they have noticed significant growth in specific areas.

“We’re very intentional about… keeping up the image that we are an amoeba… I think that’s really important in front of a leadership team: to make sure that they know that we are a united front at all times.” — Kristie Kinley

Houston and Kristie have found these three keys to be essential for a thriving partnership:

  1. Trust: Until you trust each other, you will not get far.
  2. Communication: Understand how you like to communicate and also how your team best receives communication. Practice speaking in a way that reaches them, even if it’s not your style.
  3. Appreciation: Each person has different gifts to bring to the table. Work to understand the value of what your teammate has to offer.

“One of the things that you give up in leadership is the convenience of having people communicate to you the way you like to be communicated [to], and instead you meet people where they are.” — Houston Goodwin

About The Rocket Fuel Podcast

Every outstanding entrepreneurial business has a common element that launched it to success.

It has a Visionary who sees the big picture, envisions the future, and lives for challenge and risk. It also has an Integrator™, who works behind the scenes executing the business plan and doing the backbreaking work of making the Visionary’s dreams a reality.

On their own, these two types of leaders have potential, but together they form an essential relationship that propels their business to new heights – we call that Rocket Fuel™.

Join real and raw conversations with the world’s top entrepreneurial duos as they talk about their journey to getting more of what they want from their business. Hosted by Mark C. Winters, Visionary and co-author of Rocket Fuel.
