After completing the Core Values exercise for your organization (learn how on pages 34-45 of Traction) you can make them come alive with a Core Values Speech (see examples on pages 39-44 of Traction) and also with your company’s Core Values Book. This book captures stories from employees, customers and vendors about how your company’s values resonate with them. Let them tell a story about how one or more of your values supported a fellow employee or how it gave a customer a reason to return.

Business accountability in simplest terms means you do what you say you are going to do as a business. In contrast, the norm today is to over-promise and under-deliver. Dates and times mean almost nothing. Many companies can’t even hit within the time range they communicate. Charging above the quoted price has become so common, many of us have just come to expect it.

If you have been an organization for a while, it’s very possible that the vision that existed at the beginning isn’t clear anymore, or perhaps it just doesn’t fit the organization today. Perhaps you’ve merged with or acquired another organization. Maybe you have a new partner. Whatever your history, when you look out across your entire organization now, can you say everyone is on the same page, heading in the same meaningful direction? If not, how do you get that single vision back with everyone engaged and rowing together?
